Synopsis
Mrs Bennett is determined to get her daughters married. Jane, Elizabeth and Lydia, likely looking girls in an unlikely looking period when a woman’s only possible career is matrimony. Jane and her Mr Bingley and Lydia with her Mr Wickham are quite content with the way of things; not Elizabeth, who refuses to marry Mr Collins whom she deplores and Mr Darcy whom she secretly adores. The play is the story of the duel between Elizabeth and her pride and Darcy and his prejudice. Each gives in and pride and prejudice meet halfway.
Directors Notes
What a cast! I have never worked with so many people in a play before, but at the time of writing I am looking forward to it immensely. I would personally like to welcome all the new-comers to BLT, the eleven members of Kaleidoscope, some of whom are performing in a main house play for the first time, and of course our well-known seasoned performers. I hope the experience is rewarding.
Having directed Jane Eyre last season, I know it is difficult to please everyone in regard to adaptations of novels, but I hope we can please the majority with our production this week. In this version Mrs Bennet is determined to marry off her three daughters, as opposed to the five who are in the book, so we have the main love story between Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet, Jane and Mr Bingley and Lydia running away with Wickham. We also have the other main characters from the novel, but of course we only have one stage to show three different houses!
I thank Graeme and Phil for their Set and Lighting which help in getting over this difficulty. I am afraid, Ladies of the audience, that I cannot give you our Mr Darcy dripping wet from a lake however! Shame!
