In the Havencrest Nursing Home for the elderly, Harry Troop struggles to regain his identity as a star of the music-hall stage. The tetchy old man insists he is not the humble Harold of his childhood, but Harry, the entertainer. His flashes of comic talent intrigue Stephanie, his nurse, and she helps him revive his memories in a bitter-sweet story of the seductiveness of fame and the price of ambition.
Directors Notes
After some considerable time I am in the director’s chair once again. When we began rehearsing it came to me that once again for the fourth time the subject of the play was old age. There has to be a psychological reason for this but then again it may be my own increasing years! I have such happy memories of the other three plays. I will never forget Gordon Sugden in all of them. “On Golden Pond”, “A Month of Sundays” and “Celebration”. His very different portrayals of old age were masterly. As indeed was Donald Clough
in the latter two. There are still pieces of dialogue that return to make me smile. Sad moments showed how adept both men are in putting over to an audience a real range of emotions and the humour reflected their ability to deliver perfectly timed dialogue. This play has all of this plus a clever use of time, place and what can only be described as images of the mind. Once again I am blessed with the masterly touch. Stuart Farrell is a joy to work with, An actor of such abilities that I feel my “Swan Song” is going to be worth it all. But that is not to forget the other ingredients. Nadine, Laura and Steven, who is “Mr. Music and Dance”. A wonderful addition to B.L.T. Feed and Enjoy!
