Synopsis
Don and Shirley Weston have come to the Scardale Hall Health Hydro to relax, pamper themselves and possibly rescue their ailing marriage. Don proves himself hilariously incompetent at step aerobics, squash and slide aerobics, and his experiences with colour therapy and massage are far from positive, too. The rifts in the marriage widen as Don’s mid-life crisis becomes more and more evident, and moments of reconciliation do little to improve the situation. Darkly amusing, perceptive and troubling, a comedy with real bite.
Directors Notes
When I first read this play, I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Then I read it again and I laughed until I cried. John Godber has written a richly inventive comedy with dark, emotional overtones involving, frankly, a group of rather sad people. If you leave tonight having had a good laugh and plenty to think about then we, as a team, will know that we have achieved our aim to entertain you. Meanwhile – don’t tell the cast – I have booked into a health farm for ……..no, don’t even whisper it…. …and, no – I won’t tell you where, either!
