Synopsis

Vera has a close and loving family, even if they bicker a lot. Nona married Arthur who, at the moment, has left her. Lois married Bill and is happily producing grandchildren. And Bob married Jeff. Not that Vera sees Bob & Jeffs relationship in quite that light! Jeff, like Arthur, is restless and in need of a change, unable to express his frustrations and fears to his partner and concerned that life’s opportunities are passing him by. But Jeff is also haunted by the belief that he is a solitary person, without family and will never be a father. Yet he is “one lucky enough to be born both ways” and he could choose a future which would meet that need – but it would be without Bob and against his own preferences. This sharply observed comedy will make you laugh in recognition of the pitfalls of family life, yet move you intensely and leave you with food for thought.

Directors Notes

The main theme of the play is that it is ‘good to talk’, and not just for B. T. either.

Talk, yes, but is it necessary to be absolutely truthful to our friends, relations and partners? Or is it safer not to reveal our innermost feelings? Is keeping quiet about some things, really being kind, or merely more convenient and less painful for ourselves.

Jimmie Chinn explores these questions with a great deal of humour and sensitivity in this play about family life.

Enjoy a happy evening – then over a drink, or supper – talk about it !
