Synopsis

There are three worlds in this play; fairyland, a court inhabited by men and women from Greek mythology, and the rustic reality of Bottom and his companions; and their interweaving, on a midsummer night of moon and starlight, is magical. The young Shakespeare, setting out to delight and amuse his audience, achieves enchantment in a celebration of love.

Directors Notes

Late in the play Hermia thinks she sees the world through dreamy, unfocused eyes “when everything seems double” “and you the audience may also sense moments of double vision. For in this tale of a Duke and his Lady, of lovers, fairies and workmen meeting in a
wood in the dream time of a midsummer’s night, two actors take the dual roles of Theseus and Oberon and of Hippolyta and Titania. Two sets of lovers, spell-bound, become entangled as to who loves whom while Puck and his shadow together make double mischief. There are even two directors, colliding happily with each other and their cast who have worked with such high spirited diligence through rehearsals, (using two rooms of course). While “these visions do appear” we wish you joy in the evening and a good night from him and a good night from her.
