Cast

Rita – Lorraine Taylor-Parker
Frank – Allan Hollings

Synopsis

You’ve watched the film, now see the play in all its fresh immediacy as Rita, hungry to find some meaning to life, embarks on an Open University course with disillusioned Frank as her tutor. It is an education process for them both with effects that are amusing or serious and choices that may be illuminating for us all. A rich comedy for two people.

Directors Notes

“You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear”

In Educating Rita the author, with the help of Frank, a tutor in English land a disillusioned silk purse maker) show that this is indeed possible. I can’t help but think that the ear would have served the sow better than it does Rita.

Rita is a forthright twenty six year old hairdresser who is hungry to find some meaning to life and to ‘know everything’. With Frank as her tutor Rita embarks on an Open University course and her education process begins. The effects are both amusing and serious as her fresh intuitive approach become clouded when she grapples with the problems of a formal education geared to the passing of exams.

The play has enjoyed great success on stage, screen and television and I hope that this marathon for two actors will enjoy the success with our Bingley Little Theatre audiences
