Synopsis

The play on which the Henry Fonda/Katharine Hepburn film was based. Ethel and Norman return to their summer home on Golden Pond for their 44th year. He, crotchety, sharp-tongued, observant and eager, she, humouring and loving him, are visited by their divorced
daughter, her fiancé and the fiancé’s teenage son. Norman takes the boy under his wing, the grandchild which the couple have longed for – but the learning is not just one-way. A simple, moving and beautiful play, funny and heart-warming.

Directors Notes

On Golden Pond. A poignant story about relationships. Many of the situations are evocative of our own experiences and will occasionally catch us wondering who a particular piece of dialoque reminds us of. Some of the words are typical of the USA and unfamiliar to our ears but the meaning and intent could not be more clear. Ethel and Norman have visited their home on Golden Pond every summer for 48 years. Not a smart house. Not a smart couple. Getting on in years, well worn like a favourite armchair. They have memories in plenty. Memories of the huge space that lies beyond the house that is Golden Pond. Rippling water surrounded by trees. Home to the many birds and bugs beloved and plagued alike. We see, through them, a summer of doing what they’ve always enjoyed doing and rediscovering, perhaps, a little of what we all at times take for granted.
