Directors Notes
People called it the War to end all Wars. Old men envied the young men marching off to fight at Passchendaele, Arras or the Somme.
Young men wondered why they were there at all and died wondering. It was a War that brought out some of the best as well as some of the worst in human nature.
This evening’s play is about a group of men who, required to implement a law they believed in principle to be necessary and just, experienced its workings in practice as horrifyingly wrong. It is the law which defines the Army’s right to punish desertion by death.
