Directors Notes

Colin Welland spent four years as an art teacher before taking up a successful acting career, a career which has covered stage, television and films, and includes parts in ‘The Birthday Party’, ‘Z Cars’, and ‘Straw Dogs’. His experiences gave him a unique insight into the working of television, accounting in part for the success of his many television plays.

In 1971 he was voted both ‘Best Film Supporting Actor’ and ‘Best Television Writer’ by the Society of Film and Television Arts. Apart from ‘Say Goodnight to Grandma’, he has written one other stage play, ‘A Roomful of Holes which was performed at the Edinburgh Festival. He continues to write and act and appeared as Tony in ‘Say Goodnight to Grandma’ when it opened at the St. Martin’s Theatre, London, in March 1973.
