Directors Notes

The characters in the play are real and the events are factual so for once we can know what happened after the curtain falls. Broadhead did go to America but returned after some years to live out his life in rather less prominence in Sheffield. Samuel Crookes -who was also given a Certificate of Immunity -was restored to his job by forgiving employers and sinned no more; Leng saw his work bring an end to the “horrible outrages” and (though this is hearsay) Miss Blanche de la Fleur became One of the most dazzling stars of the Victorian Music Hall. At least the last of them got no more than she deserved.
