Directors Notes
This play within a play is about Littlechap, who thought he was more perspicacious” more equal than all the other equal men, in the stupendous, non-stop circus of life.
In the opening mime, we see the clown pondering on different subjects for his act. In turn he mimes a tight-rope walker, a bullfighter, a juggler. Then, on seeing a baby in the audience, decides to act out in mime, words and music, the birth and life of Littlechap. From his birth mime and first few faltering steps, he rapidly progresses through his school years, his first interview for work and his first job–tea boy.
Littlechap discovers his ideal in Evie, and, although there are other women in his life, Anya, Ilse and Ginnie, somehow they all turn out to be Evie. We see him in his joys and his sorrows, his triumphs and disappointments. And like the rest of us when circumstances become just that bit too much for us, he cries -STOP THE WORLD!
