WE OWE IT ALL TO AGATHA CHRISTIE
A short time ago, someone remarked that they thought murder was a peculiar subject for a musical show. Well possibly it is but no more peculiar maybe than industrial action in a clothing factory; the persecution of the Jews in Russia; the conversion of a womanising gambler and so on.
If the popularity of ‘the Mousetrap’, the long distance runner of the London theatre scene, is any indication, it would seem that audiences love a who-dunnit, so why not add a little music? Also, ‘Something’s Afoot’ is an ideal show for the not-so-large stage of the Arts Centre. We don’t have to clutter it up with a chorus of singing Arabs, Mounties, beer drinking Students, Salvation Army Bands etc… just dead bodies.
You may also find this show instructive should you be considering going into the murder business. It’s full of ingenious ideas. All that is required is a rambling old country house cut off by a storm from the outside world, lot’s of thunder and lightning and a houseparty of likely suspects. If you’re stuck with a modern semi and haven’t got a rambling old country house, you can borrow ours when the show has finished. (Yorkshire Television are.)
