Directors Notes
Take an idea, a director, five actors- and what do you get? The answer is the improvisation which culminated in ‘“Abigail’s Party” a black comedy originally devised by Mike Leigh and his cast.
The setting is a trendy home on a ‘mixed’ estate- the home of brittle, bulldozing Beverly and her overworked, over-pushed estate agent husband, Laurence, who, to her disdain, has a penchant for Beethoven, Van Gogh and Lowry. Beverly arranges a Saturday night get-
together for three of her neighbours – Tony, an unsuccessful footballer turned computer operator, on whom she’s turned her lustful gaze – Angela, his wife – the non too bright S.R.N., and Sue, a sad divorcee, whose teenage daughter, Abigail, is also giving a party across the way. The youngsters make riotous hay whilst the sun shines, and the adults exchange the usual neighbourly small talk.
We evesdrop on their conversation and our laughter becomes increasingly uneasy as the gin and tonics loosen tongues and inhibitions, exposing the paper thin fabric of their various marital relationships.
We hope you enjoy seeing “Abigail’s Party” as much as we have enjoyed rehearsing it, and wish you a laughter filled evening – but beware – there’s a sting in its tail!
