Synopsis

This newly released play tells the story of Susan, a vicar’s wife, who is accidentally hit on the head by a garden rake. This, combined with her mental state, triggers off a wild fantasy life peopled by an idealised family, invisible to others, which positively mirrors the negative gaps in her own reality. A funny and moving play.

Directors Notes

This play was first performed in May 1985 in Scarborough.

It is most important to realise that all that happens in this play is experienced by Susan, the main character. Her emotions and thoughts, her fears and fantasies are harassing her through a few days of her life after an accident. Alan Ayckbourn has, as usual, observed minutely, some aspects of all our lives and reflected it, perhaps more somberly than in previous plays but not without his usual humour.

I hope you enjoy tonight’s performance.
