Synopsis
Set in 1920’s Chicago the story revolves around a women’s prison and in particular the lives of Roxy Hart and Velma Kelly. An outrageous musical vaudeville which should provide an exciting and glittering end to the season. The superb musical numbers include ‘Razzle Dazzle’, ‘All That Jazz’ , ‘Funny Honey’, and ‘Class’.
Directors Notes
The story set to music of two murders that happened over 60 years ago. A story so improbable, so interweaved, so unbelievable that there is only one country it could have happened in America, and only one city ‘CHICAGO’.
It’s a time of razzmatazz! and the Black Bottom, of speakeasies and gunmen, pimps and whores. A time when lite was taken lightly and passion followed without constraint.
The play ‘CHICAGO’ opened December 30th 1926 to rave reviews. The New York Times summed it up as a “Satirical Comedy on the administration of justice through the fetid channels of newspaper publicity – of photographers, sob sisters, feature stunts and general vulgarity.
It was not until after the death of Maurine Dallas Watkins that her estate became open and the original interest of Bob Fosse, Robert Fryer and Gwen Verdon, secured the rights. The musical version of ‘Chicago’ first opened 3rd June 1975 at the 46th Street Theatre.
I hope that our production will “Razzle Dazzle” you. It has been a joy working with a cast and crew so enthusiastic and dedicated. I hope that you enjoy your evening.
