Directors Notes

What a curious people We British are happy to “nudge, nudge, wink, wink”, but shocked if the same thoughts or words are openly expressed!

The improbable events of the plot of “No Sex Please We’re British” are simple enough. Peter and Frances’s blissful new marriage is interrupted by the arrival of a stream of pornographic material. How to get rid of it? And how to hide its existence from mother-in-law and from the boss? Only in England, perhaps, could such a premise be the basis of a plot.

I wonder, in passing, how many members of the audiences during the play’s 16 year record-breaking West End run were attracted by the second word of the title – without realising the equal significance of the first word? But if they were disappointed to find “No Sex” they will certainly have been delighted to find an evening of fast and furious farce.

It’s cold outside; welcome into the warmth of our Little Theatre, ladies and gentlemen – and have a good British laugh!
