Directors Notes
The most difficult task facing the director is the writing of these notes. Standing in front of 9 actors and telling them what to do is, by comparison , a piece of Dundee. Should you fail the responsibility is divisible by 10.
With ‘Directors Notes’ you are the only man at the wicket. The soft option is to pinch the bit from the back of the French’s acting edition and hope that none of the cast have bothered to read that far.
Option 2 is to write “It’s a very funny play about cricket* and subtly pad it out with another 293 words. Option 3 – dig deeper – mention sub-text, bring in Freudian undertones, good for a para or two and the cast might be impressed. To the best of my knowledge dear old Sigmond never turned in a single half-decent scripts, but unwittingly, and without putting pen to paper, he’s had his sticky finger in thousands of plays – according to the critics – and those lads really know what they are typing about.
Cracked it, tell them about all the hilarious japes and near disasters during the rehearsal period – what a super cast and pats on the back for the rest of the side. Don’t forget the magic word Teamwork’ and make sure the exclamation mark on the old Olivetti is In good working order. Bring in Mary Newton! and Rex Squiresll for although they have had absolutely nothing to do with this production, everybody knows them so they are good copy.
Another ploy, list what the London critics said:
“A rattling good night out® Peregrine Worsthorne.
I’ve often wondered if his mum and dad were called Doris and Fred…
‘Outside Edge’ is a very funny play about cricket.
