Synopsis

These are the exuberant comic records, kept by 15 year old Eugene, (with his adolescent eye on his cousin and her ‘developed chest’) of the various members of his Jewish family who live near Brighton Beach, New York State. In rough-and-tumble turn, they are hurt,
exasperated, protective and quarrelsome, they talk, occasionally even listen and are forever in one another’s way gloriously; but always and with undefined courage, they fight to hold themselves together against their background of poverty and the distant threat of war in Europe.

Directors Notes

Tonight’s play is set in Brighton Beach, New York, 1937, against a background of poverty, and the distant threat of war in Europe.

This is the first play in a trilogy by this prolific writer, Neil Simon.

These are the records kept by 15 year old Eugene, about the life of the Jerome family: All life is here; the hopes and aspirations, the hurts and loves, the quarrels and forgivings, the laughter and tears. I’m sure everyone sitting in the audience will be able to relate to some aspect of the Jerome family life.

Not many plays are written with such good parts for both younger and older actors. This one is an excellent example. It has been a joy to work with a cast and crew, so dedicated, hard working and willing. Here lies a vision of some of our best young talent for the future of B.L.T.

I do hope you enjoy your evening
