Synopsis

At Mt. St. Helen’s School in New York, a performance of Grease is about to take place. The 5 Nuns who run the school, comic characters all, reveal their secret ambitions and past lives through song and dance.

Directors Notes

The Little Sisters of Hoboken operate Mount Saint Helen’s School in Hoboken, New Jersey. Originally founded as a missionary order, they started out running a leper colony on an island south of France. Forced to leave the island when they lost to a group of Protestant competitors, they returned to Hoboken. There they went on with their daily routine until one day their cook, Sister Julia, unwittingly served some tainted vichyssoise soup and 52 sisters died of botulism. Fortunately a few of the sisters were off playing bingo with some sisters from another order and so were spared. Upon discovering the disaster Mother Superior had a vision to start a greeting card company to raise funds to bury the 52 dead sisters, which they did. However after 48 the funds ran out ! So the last 4 are in the convent deep freeze !!!!

This evening forms part of a fundraising activity to enable those last four sisters to be sent to claim their heavenly reward.

Since Nunsense opened in 1985 at the Cherry Lane Theatre, New York it has become something of a ‘cult’ show in America. In 1987 it won an award for the best ‘off Broadway Musical, best book and best music.
