Directors Notes

Three sisters meet on the eve of their mother’s funeral. Tensions mount as family differences resurface and long buried truths emerge. Even the dead mother has a thing or two to say! “The Memory of Water” was first performed at The Hampstead Theatre in July 1996, starring Haydn Gwynne. In 2000 it won the Lawrence Olivier Award for best comedy. “The Memory of Water” is a pithy and emotionally charged dark comedy, which shows the fragile. unstable nature of many family institutions. It is both amusing and thought provoking, and does not shy away from some of the less savoury ingredients of a family’s history and relationships.
