Synopsis
Liz Lochhead’s delightful new play is as funny, as touching, and yet emotionally true as anything this supremely humane writer has yet produced. Set in a charity shop it has a lot to say about finding love the second (or third or fourth) time around.
Directors Notes
A tonic, an evening of fun, much needed in these depressing times; that is what co-director Mervyn Button and I hope to bring you with Good Things, by Liz Lochhead. Poet and playwright Liz, a giant of the Scottish literary scene, produced early work noted for its feminism and seriousness; but in 1998 wrote Perfect Days (which I had the pleasure of directing at Ilkley) in response to a bet from friends to produce a play with a happy ending. It was a huge hit! Good Things (2006) is its companion piece, also dealing lightly with a woman’s mid-life crisis; instead of a 39 year old desperate for a child, we meet 49 year old Susan, desperate not to be left on the shelf along with the unwanted goods at the Charity Shop where she works; can Cinderella get to the Ball? A cast of 4 experienced Bingley regulars is lined up to play the farrago of characters who come through the shop door. The Guardian praised the “laughs, the pathos.. .and the happy ending… such feelgood assurance that you can only be entertained”.
