Synopsis
Pre-Pubescent Politicking and dramatic disaster abounds as Mrs Horrocks’ class at Flint Street Primary School perform their annual nativity play.
Mary is bossing everyone around, Joseph doesn’t know his lines, the Innkeeper is ad-libbing like crazy, the Star of Bethlehem doesn’t like his pointy bits and the Angel Gabriel is planning something.
Still it will (probably) be all right on the night. As long as we can find the escaped stick insect…
Directors Notes
Mizziz Horrocks’ class of seven year olds are about to perform their nativity play at Flint Street Junior School for proud mums and dads. What could possibly go wrong?
This is a Christmas cracker of a play – or is it really a mini-musical? – there are lots of songs and they are as much part of the dialogue as the rest of the play. Tim Firth has cleverly written some ‘interesting words’ to many of our well-known and much loved carols. They reflect the true thoughts of the children and also, later on, reflect the lives of the parents.
The way the parents are at the end of the play goes a long way to explain why the children are as they are – very much like in real life!
It was made into a film with stars such as Frank Skinner, Jane Horrocks. Neil Morrissey, John Thompson, Julia Sawalha and Stephen Tompkinson amongst others – but the film version is much darker than the play with children and animals (babies, the ass, donkey, stick insect…..); there are some ‘aah’ moments.
Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from me and the cast of The Flint Street Nativity.
