Synopsis

The plot revolves around Montgomery Brewster, a young man who inherits a million pounds from his rich grandfather. Shortly after, his grandmother, who hated Brewster’s grandfather (a long-held grudge stemming from the grandfather’s disapproval of the marriage of Brewster’s parents) also dies. The grandmother’s will stipulates that Monty Brewster will inherit 10 million dollars, but only under the condition that he keeps none of the grandfather’s money. Brewster is required to spend every penny of his grandfather’s million before his next birthday, resulting in no assets or property held from the wealth at the end of that time. If Brewster meets these terms, he will gain the full 10 million; if he fails, he remains penniless. Moreover, Brewster is not allowed to confide in anyone due to the strict conditions imposed by his grandmother’s will. Complicating matters is the disapproval of the beautiful Barbara Drew and Monty’s growing affection for his childhood friend, Peggy Gray.

Directors Notes

The novel of Brewster’s Millions was written in 1902 and has been adapted for the stage and cinema many times with the 1985 Richard Pryor film being perhaps the best-remembered by many. Last year’s Kaleidoscope production, Salem, was very well-received but we decided that, for our 2018 production, our youth cast needed something light and frivolous with a touch of glamour -hence our choice of the 1920s as our setting. The perennial problem of finding something comedic with a cast of 48 led me to the novel of Brewster’s Millions. It in many ways reminded me of our 2014 adaptation of Around The World in Eighty Days in that we could provide all our talented cast with a named role as well as having large chorus scenes and a few songs. We have enjoyed rehearsals very much which I hope shows in the performances and the entertainment you get from watching.
