Synopsis
Come back to the ‘60’s with BLT in this brilliant Neil Simon comedy. Full of the joy and laughter of that golden time, immortalised in the Jane Fonda, Robert Redford film, this original stage play tells of young New York brand – newly weds who have just moved into their cold eyrie apartment. Corrie is starry – eyed, Paul and Corrie’s mom less so after staggering up five flights. Add a late ‘60’s bohemian neighbour and some great music and you’re in for a lockdown break – out treat.
Directors Notes
Welcome back to Bingley Little Theatre. It’s great to see so many people in our theatre, joining with members in our primary purpose – to celebrate and enjoy the thrills and spills of the very best live amateur theatre. Long may it continue!
Those who remember the Jane Fonda and Robert Redford film of the 60s may be a little surprised to see our updated version. We’ve moved the action forwards to the late 60s, only a few years after its original Broadway production, but a generation or more away in cultural terms. The butterfly of flower power, of the Beatles and social liberation is springing joyously free of the grey post war period, just as we hopefully are springing joyously free of pandemic and lock-downs.
The story is simple. Corrie and Paul are newly and deliriously married. They are moving into their cheap and cheerful 5th floor New York apartment. What could possibly go wrong? A crazy neighbour, a well-meaning mother and disbelieving delivery men have their say, things go pear shaped… and all is well in the end.
The writing, as we expect from Neil Simon (in his first big hit), is funny, clever, sharp and entertaining.
We have a hugely talented cast, a terrifically dedicated support team, as ever at BLT, and we have you, a dedicated and supportive audience.
Have fun. We will!
