Synopsis
Life is filled with little routines that we create for ourselves – giving the days shape and purpose. As the decades pass, how does life change us? How do our relationships with others affect us? What shared memories do each of us have and how differently do we view those memories? As the years pass, have our expectations of life, and each other, been met? Are the hopes, dreams and yearnings of youth satisfied? This beautiful, thought – provoking play explores these questions, and more, as we watch the young Margaret and William become their older selves: Maggie and Billy.
Directors Notes
Thank you for braving the January weather, Covid and whatever other challenges you may be facing to come and see this beautiful piece of theatre.
Abi Morgan’s words are carefully chosen, at times poignant and sad, but with a peppering of humour, often at unexpected moments.
The challenges for amateurs attempting to deliver a play with lots of physical contact and dance as well as a complex sound and lighting plot, including projection, are many. Fortunately, we have been blessed with a great team of people: four very talented actors willing to give anything a go; experienced ‘techies’ bringing their expertise and flair, and a kind, patient and supportive stage manager and backstage crew.
Each of you will have many things you can relate to as memories and specific periods of Billy/William and Maggie/Margaret’s lives are revealed to us using dialogue, dance and sensory effects.
Watch in wonder as Abi Morgan’s beautifully-observed, thought provoking ‘Lovesong’ unfolds, touching the very heart of the human condition.
