Synopsis

Love is all around in the kingdom of Illyria during mid-winter. However, it is not always well placed. Two twins separated by a storm, navigate this new land and all the lonely hearts that call it home in their quest to find one another again.

Duke Orsino, ruler of this land, pines for Lady Olivia. However, thus far all his attempts to woo her have faltered due to her being in mourning over her recently deceased brother. Meanwhile, Viola is swept onto the shores of Illyria having lost her twin brother Sebastian out at sea. In order to fit in this new land, Viola decides to enter the household of Duke Orsino, dressed as a man named Cesario, where she quickly becomes favoured by the Duke. But Viola/Cesario’s position starts to become compromised as she starts to have feelings towards the duke. This is made even more complex when, on delivering a message to Lady Olivia, the Lady starts to fall in love with Viola/Cesario.

Cases of mistaken identity, matters of the heart, and a high energy, dynamic cast are central to this new, festive adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic. Influenced by glam-rock, both musically and visually, this ingenious piece Will have you laughing, despairing, but most importantly, rocking this festive season. Music is indeed the food of love, and so Bingley Little Theatre invites you to come and play on!

Directors Notes

Twelfth Night is an interesting piece and Alex is bringing his collaborative, highly energetic, directorial style to a classic, giving it a modern twist in a way that has never been done before. The play has clear themes of gender, which sparked the glam-rock theme, and this is something Alex has tried to pry into further with his cast, many of whom are not your ‘typical’ casting options for certain characters. Alex hopes you will enjoy this new adaptation and will be dancing in the aisles on a number of occasions throughout the show! Music is indeed the food of love, and so let’s play on!
