Directors Notes

This classic novella by Dickens hardly needs any introduction being so well-known and well-loved. It tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, the miser who is visited by the ghost of his former business partner, Jacob Marley, and by the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Christmas Yet to Come. A redemption tale – Scrooge is happily transformed into an altogether better man at the end. It was first published on 19 December 1843 and the first edition had sold out by Christmas Eve. It has remained popular ever since, with theatre adaptations all over the world each December. I am delighted to be collaborating with the multi-talented Katy Grainger once again and very pleased to be directing a multi-generational cast – working with some of our current youth theatre students, recent graduates, as well as the ‘over-21’ cast. They’ve worked incredibly hard to bring what I hope will be an uplifting production and help prepare us all for Christmas. I hope you enjoy our adaptation, and that Mr Dickens isn’t spinning in his grave at the amendments and additions we have made to his text.
